Malwarebytes and Avast are both powerful antivirus solutions, which use very different tactics for security. Their core systems both use heuristic scanning to identify suspicious behaviors of both known and zero-day attacks. However, Malwarebytes focuses on custom scanning options, detailed reports, and ongoing liaison with the company. Their “Bug Bounty” initiative offers cash prizes for reports so security holes can be patched promptly. Users are also able to look back over their entire scan history and receive full anti-phishing and web protection without the need for a browser extension.

While Malwarebytes offers deep cybersecurity insight, Avast promises smooth usability with innovative features to ensure the antivirus works with you. The ‘Passive Mode’ will turn off part of the suite for tasks that need high CPU usage. Similarly, ‘Game Mode’ pauses all popups so they don’t interrupt gaming. The system also uses a sandbox environment and “Secure WiFi” protocol to guarantee protection from a wide range of cyber threats. Other additional features include a password vault and digital file shredder.

Both companies offer a wide range of customer support channels and their online documentation is very thorough. Plus, Malwarebytes includes a ticketed system that can directly export data from the main program. At the same time, Avast offers round-the-clock phone support for all users. Both companies also have a live chat option.

Both Malwarebytes and Avast are high quality; the main difference is the active input you can have with the program. Malwarebytes may be best if you’re a tech lover who wants to be more intimately involved with your computer’s security. Avast might be the better choice for new users who want strong protection with an easy-to-use UI.
