Intego ONE Review: Quick Expert Summary

Intego ONE is an all-in-one security suite designed specifically for macOS. It replaces Intego’s older multi-app X9 lineup (e.g., VirusBarrier, NetBarrier, etc.) with a single, unified app that includes:

  • Antivirus — Real-time and on-demand scanning tailored for macOS threats.
  • Firewall — Monitors your connection, blocks threats, and sends you alerts if it encounters anything suspicious.
  • SmartClean performance optimizer — Safe cleanup utilities for junk files, duplicates, and startup items.
  • VPN (with Complete plan) — Useful for basic Wi-Fi protection, though not a full replacement for a standalone VPN.

So, is Intego ONE worth the money? Definitely, if you’re a Mac user! That said, there’s still room for improvement. I’d like to see more transparent third-party test results and a more fully featured VPN.

Overall, Intego ONE delivers strong macOS-focused protection, improved usability, and solid value for users who only need to protect Macs. It also comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can try it out without any financial risk.

April 2026 update: We updated the whole review to describe the new Intego ONE Mac solution after Intego retired the old X9 bundles.

Intego ONE Full Review — Comprehensive Security for Macs (Best in 2026)

Intego is one of the best antiviruses for macOS in 2026. It outperforms macOS’s built-in protections and other Mac-based antiviruses, and it consistently caught all malware in my tests.

I tested the Intego ONE Complete plan since it has all of Intego’s features. It has an effective antivirus scanner, a customizable firewall, system optimization tools, and a VPN. It’s affordable and offers a more complete package than any other antivirus app I’ve tried on my Mac.

However, Intego is missing some features, namely a password manager. You can use Intego alongside something like 1Password, but I’d like to see a password manager included. It would also be great if the VPN were included in all of its plans.

Intego ONE Plans & Pricing — Excellent Value & Cheaper Than Most Mac-Based Competitors

Editor's Note: Intego ONE and this site are in the same ownership group.

Intego ONE offers simplified 1- and 2-year subscription plans built around a single, all-in-one app rather than separate products or bundles as it did before. It’s competitively priced, especially the Essential plan, costing less than competitors while including antivirus and firewall.

Only the Complete includes the VPN by default, and optimization tools (SmartClean) are available with Advanced and Complete. All plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Here’s a quick overview of Intego ONE’s plans:

Intego ONE Security Features — Excellent Range of Features & They All Outperform Apple’s Built-in Protections

Antivirus — Finds All Mac-Based Malware & Scans Emails for Viruses

I found the Intego ONE Antivirus dashboard to be simple and easy to use while still packing in all the essential virus protection tools you need. These include a real-time protection feature to scan and block malware at all times, an antivirus scan for emails and volumes upon mounting, and detection settings letting you enable antivirus scans to either detect or ignore Windows threats. There are also additional options you can enable, like power-saving mode for lower CPU usage, an archived file scan, and playing a sound if any threats are detected or when a scan is completed.

Although Intego doesn’t offer an iOS app, it makes it easy to check your iPhone and iPad for malicious files that could spread to your computer. You can do this by connecting your iOS device to your Mac running Intego ONE. The antivirus feature will notify you of threats on your iOS device, but you must resolve any detected issues directly on that device.

Intego ONE offers several scan types:

  • Full Scan — checks the entire startup disk and mounted drives
  • Quick Scan — focuses on locations most commonly targeted by malware
  • Custom Scan — lets you scan specific files or folders
  • ONE Scan — a fast, one-click scan launched from the tray menu
Intego ONE

In my tests, Intego’s Quick Scan took just over a minute to go through more than 170,000 files, while the Full Scan analyzed over 800,000 files on my Mac in only 2 minutes and 30 seconds. That’s impressively faster than many other antivirus scanners out there. To be fair, my Mac’s speedy NVMe storage likely played a role, but Intego’s file-caching technology definitely helped speed things up.

I also tested it on an older Mac. On that device, the quick scan took 5 minutes (scanning over 300,000 files), and the full scan took 1 hour, which is about average. Note that you can also schedule scans to your own liking.

I’m pleased to report that the Antivirus feature detected 100% of the malware samples I threw at it, including trojans, adware, and various other potentially harmful files. Intego ONE can detect a wide range of threats, including Mac, Windows, and Unix viruses, as well as trojans, worms, spyware, adware, macro malware (Word/Excel), keyloggers, and other potentially unwanted programs. This cross-platform detection helps prevent infected files from being stored or shared on your Mac, even if they aren’t designed to run on macOS.

Scans didn’t significantly impact my Mac’s performance, thankfully. Using the Tray menu, I found that the antivirus didn’t affect my Mac’s memory and CPU usage much, even though I had the maximum protection enabled.

Once the scan was done, Intego gave me the option to review the threat and moved it into a secure quarantine. Then, it gave me 3 options:

  • Repair — attempts to remove the malicious file (or uninstall the suspected app) and restore the file (when possible)
  • Ignore — removes the file from the quarantine list and doesn’t make changes to the file in question
  • Trust — marks the file as safe by moving it to the Safe List and excludes it from future scans

You can also manually add files to the Safe List if you trust them without Intego having to check them each time you initiate or schedule a scan.

In practice, Intego ONE successfully neutralized all detected threats. Repair attempts worked for many files, but some items could not be fully restored and remained quarantined. This isn’t a security issue (because all the files have been effectively neutralized and quarantined), but it would have been nice if the software had alerted me to it.

Intego ONE’s Antivirus focuses on file-based protection rather than full web filtering. It doesn’t include a dedicated anti-phishing engine that actively blocks malicious URLs. Instead, it checks whether your browser’s built-in security features are enabled.

This provides basic coverage, but it’s not as comprehensive as the real-time web protection offered by competitors like Norton or Bitdefender, which actively block phishing and malicious sites at the network level. That said, it still offers more protection than some Mac-only competitors, such as MacKeeper, which lacks meaningful phishing protection altogether.

Intego’s real-time protection is really good. It continuously inspects your Mac for any suspicious files or programs. I tested it by launching a range of ransomware simulations against my Mac, and the real-time engine instantly blocked all of the attacks and displayed a warning pop-up. I also like how the settings let you remove the quarantine marker from a file that’s been scanned and proven safe, so macOS doesn’t issue you a warning when you open it.

Overall, I like Intego ONE’s Antivirus range of scan options. The scanner is lightweight and quick, especially on repeat runs, which speed up significantly. I also like the email virus scan feature and the option to scan for threats on connected drives or iOS devices. I would prefer it if the Antivirus had more comprehensive anti-phishing protection, and I’d be happier if I were notified of potential issues with quarantined files, but overall, it’s a great antivirus scanner for Mac computers.

Firewall — Stops More Network-Based Attacks Than Apple’s Own Firewall

Intego’s advanced Firewall is what really sets it apart from other Mac-focused antivirus products. It’s a significant improvement over Apple’s own built-in firewall for Macs. It lets you monitor and control incoming and outgoing traffic with detailed rules and works like a barrier against malicious threats before they reach your Mac.

Rather than offering simple on/off protection, Intego ONE gives you a traffic-rule system where you can create custom firewall rules. When you add a new rule, you decide:

  • Which application or process the rule applies to (specific or any app)
  • Whether it allows, denies, or prompts for access
  • Which direction the rule covers (inbound, outbound, or both)
  • Optional specific hostnames, IPv4/IPv6 addresses, and even particular TCP/UDP ports

This level of control means you can lock down apps that shouldn’t communicate externally, or explicitly permit network traffic only for trusted software.

Another feature that I like as part of the Firewall is the Security Switch. When enabled, this works by disconnecting you from the internet altogether in case you’re experiencing an immediate threat. Blocking all network traffic means that the malicious threat won’t be able to execute fully, as it will be contained and stopped, so your Mac stays protected.

For further protection, Intego offers the Traffic Filtering Switch. This feature monitors your traffic and notifies you when an application wants to access your network. It then gives you an option to allow or deny access. For any app that you allow, Intego creates a rule for that app and adds it to Traffic Control Settings.

In the Traffic Control Settings dashboard, you see a list of all configured rules and can:

  • Review and edit existing allow/deny/ask rules
  • Remove outdated or unnecessary rules
  • Quickly set permissions at a glance for apps and domains

Another convenient thing is that you can also check your network traffic statistics in the Traffic Insights (sorted by domain) and Traffic Stats (sorted by app) sections of the Intego ONE app. You can customize these two sections to give you daily, weekly, or monthly traffic information and see the total amount of incoming and outgoing traffic. However, you can get further details for each domain/app listed in these two sections, including the amount of network traffic for that specific domain/app, how much RAM it uses, and more.

Intego ONE

Overall, I really like the Intego ONE Firewall. Some top antiviruses for Mac, like TotalAV, don’t include a firewall, so this makes Intego stand out. It’s easy to navigate, has a simple layout, has much better functionality than Apple’s built-in firewall, and includes features that help block programs making unwanted internet connections.

SmartClean — Built-In Optimization & Cleanup That Frees Space and Tracks Performance

Intego ONE’s system optimizer was previously known as the Washing Machine, but now it’s called SmartClean and is integrated into the ONE Mac app. You get this feature if you choose the Advanced or Complete plan.

It’s designed to help free disk space without aggressive optimization tricks that can cause stability issues on macOS. It also gives you detailed info about your Mac’s temperature, CPU and RAM usage of all apps/processes running on your device, and you have the option to quit them.

Intego ONE

With the Disk Space Monitor, I was able to see my disk space available, along with a storage usage summary. Here, you can view large or junk files (downloads, trash, cache, logs), and the option to clean them (whichever you select).

You get two scanning options with SmartClean:

  • Optimization Scan — Provides a thorough system scan to help you clean and speed up your Mac
  • Quick Cleanup — Rapid cleanup of junk files, including downloads, trash, cache, and logs

When conducting the Optimization Scan, I received alerts that my Mac has a high temperature, which was expected considering the number of files it checks. I appreciate that it notified me of this, so I’m aware.

Once a scan completes, you can review the list of large files and junk items and choose what to remove. Files like downloads or items in Trash can be previewed before deletion, giving you control over what gets cleaned.

SmartClean also includes an App Uninstaller, which goes beyond dragging apps to the Trash. It finds and removes associated files left behind by macOS — something Finder doesn’t do by default. This helps recover disk space that might otherwise remain tied up in leftover data.

I like that Intego also added the Optimization History section. This is basically your cleanup history conducted with the Intego ONE app, including how many junk files were removed, how many apps were uninstalled, large files cleaned, and the time and date of all scans performed over time.

Compared to other Mac cleanup utilities, SmartClean in Intego ONE strikes a good balance between safety and effectiveness. Unlike aggressive “speed-boosting” tools found in products like MacKeeper, SmartClean focuses on practical cleanup and resource monitoring without risky system tweaks. It identifies junk and large files, tracks CPU/RAM usage in real time, and includes a thorough App Uninstaller to remove leftover files — features many basic cleaners don’t offer.

VPN (Virtual Private Network) — Encrypts Your Online Activities and Masks Your IP on Mac

Intego ONE offers a VPN, but you can only get it with the Complete plan. Unlike the old Privacy Protection add-on, the Intego ONE VPN is managed from the Intego ONE interface, so you don’t need a separate app to connect, disconnect, or change settings. Setup is straightforward, and connecting to the VPN takes just a couple of clicks.

Intego ONE

The VPN provides basic protection compared to fully-fledged VPNs like ExpressVPN and PIA. It lacks many features, including split tunneling, wider protocol choice, and obfuscation. However, if you just need a VPN to encrypt your connection and change your IP so you can browse or stream more safely, it isn’t too bad.

In the VPN Locations tab, you can find all available countries and cities you can connect to. They’re grouped by region, which makes it easier to find and choose a location. I like the Recommended Location feature as well because I didn’t have to go through the whole list of servers available to connect to the best and fastest one for me. You can also see the latency next to each location, which really comes in handy.

When it comes to protocols, it only offers Lightway (TCP and UDP) and Automatic selection. The Lightway protocol offers great speeds. I had no issues with buffering when streaming or long loading times when I tried it on different websites. It also offers post-quantum protection to protect your Mac from future threats.

Another important feature that Intego VPN offers is the kill switch. It cuts off your internet traffic whenever the VPN connection drops unexpectedly, preventing data leaks. I recommend keeping the kill switch on at all times.

Intego ONE’s VPN isn’t meant to be a replacement for a full-featured independent VPN, but another security addition to the ONE app. The VPN interface doesn’t advertise advanced tools like multi-hop routing, Tor integration, or specialty servers, as seen on some of the best standalone VPNs.

Intego ONE Ease of Use & Setup — Intuitive Design With Helpful Explanations for Every Feature

How to Install Intego ONE (Just 3 Simple Steps):

  • Download Intego. Visit Intego ONE’s official website, download the desired package, and follow the on-screen prompts.
  • Create an account. As usual, you’ll need an email address and a password, in addition to your payment information.
  • Start using the Intego ONE app. Now you don’t have to grant permission to install and adjust multiple apps for Intego’s features as before. Everything is added in one app, making it more convenient and easier to use.

Intego is generally easy to set up and use. In my experience, the interface is very straightforward and user-friendly, so it’s mostly about learning how each feature works. Even if you’ve never used a similar service, you won’t have issues getting up to speed with it. I really wanted to see Intego consolidate everything into one intuitive dashboard, similar to MacKeeper and TotalAV, and it finally happened.

Intego ONE

Intego packs in a lot of advanced options, which could be overwhelming, but they’ve done an excellent job of making things accessible by including information overlays and helpful notes right within the main interface screens. This is particularly great for beginners who might not be too familiar with antivirus software.

Intego ONE requires macOS 12.4 (Monterey) or later, Apple Silicon or Intel processor, a minimum of 8GB RAM, and 2GB disk space. Overall, most of Intego’s features are well-designed, easy to use, and straightforward for most users.

Intego ONE Mobile App — Use Intego to Scan Your iOS Device

Intego ONE doesn’t currently have a mobile app. However, you can scan your iOS device for viruses and malware using the Antivirus feature — all you have to do is connect your iPhone or iPad to your Mac in the same way you’d scan an external hard drive. This feature is pretty cool, and it’s something I haven’t seen included in other Mac-based antiviruses.

Intego ONE Customer Support — Live Chat, Detailed Manuals & More

Intego’s customer support is pretty good. It offers live chat, email support, and an extensive knowledge base with full product manuals. The live chat is AI at first, so you may not always get the answers you want. But you can ask to speak to a human, and you’ll be transferred to a real agent.

This seems unnecessarily complicated, and many people might not realize the live chat option is available at all. However, once I was transferred to a real human, I was able to get answers to my questions instantly. Even though some of the answers required some back-and-forth, I was overall satisfied with the live chat experience. It wasn’t the best, but it also wasn’t the worst I’ve tried.

Intego ONE has a good FAQ section and helpful user guides. The support page is laid out clearly, with specific sections relating to each Intego product and other general questions, such as billing. I really like how each user guide has clear screenshots and offers easy-to-follow guidance, making it great for beginners.

Intego also has a 30-day money-back guarantee for all packages. My experience with requesting a refund was pretty straightforward. I emailed asking for a refund; the representative I spoke to asked the reason for my request and then proceeded to initiate my refund. I received my money back a few days later.

Overall, Intego’s customer support is good. I would prefer if the live chat connected directly to a human representative instead of having to talk to a chatbot first. But the rep was responsive and helpful when I was connected, so it’s not too big of an issue.

What Intego ONE Can Do Better — More VPN Features and a Free Trial

Intego ONE has a lot going for it — it is, after all, my favorite Mac security suite in 2026. Still, I have a few minor complaints.

The main issue is the barebones VPN that’s only available with the Complete plan. It’s good to have it for additional security, but if I’m paying for the highest plan to get the VPN, I’m expecting more features.

Currently, the VPN offers just the Lightway protocol along with an automatic selection and a kill switch. It doesn’t have split tunneling, obfuscation, or specialty servers.

Also, Intego ONE doesn’t offer a free trial, so down the line, I’d like to see this added so people can try it without having to rely solely on the money-back guarantee.

These aren’t major issues, and they weren’t a deal breaker for me. Intego ONE isn’t perfect, but it does its job effectively. Nevertheless, it remains my top pick for best Mac antivirus.

Is Intego ONE Really the Best Antivirus Software for Mac in 2026?

In a word — yes! Although I have mixed feelings about some of Intego’s features, it’s great overall. I fully trust the software to protect my Mac against malware, and I love how it helps me clean up my computer.

I would choose Intego over any other Mac antivirus, as it’s highly customizable and has a great range of features. The functionality of Intego’s smart firewall alone makes it my favorite Mac security software.

All in all, Intego provides great value. If you’re interested, you can try it out risk-free with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

If there’s something we haven’t covered in our Intego ONE review that you’re curious about, send us a message — we’ll be happy to carry out extra tests and answer any questions.

Great product
Mac User
I started using Intego Internet Security X6 when I got my first mac in 2009. The virusbarrier app really does protect your mac against mac malware. Their firewall "Netbarrier" in my opinion is the best firewall for macs. Just remember, no AV product is a 100%. The biggest factor is people making bad choices.

I am not unhappy with Intego. However I notice that the number and frequency of security updates are always high before and just after your subscription expires! And for a user the menu options and possibilities are the already the same for many years. No innovations.

Slow Browsing with Firefox
Mac User
Downloaded today. The interface is nice, but I noticed instantaneously that it slowed my browsing to a crawl. As an example, just navigating to adobe.com went from 4 seconds without netbarrier turned on, to 50 seconds with it turned on. Logging in was even worse. I can't see how this software is even usable with that sort of performance. I tested it on Chrome as well. Went from 4 seconds to 29 seconds. If you use a web browser, this product is unusable in its current form.

Like so many things these days, it is great, until it isn't and you cannot get any customer service! Repeat, if there is a problem and you need customer service, good luck.
When I purchased a new MacBook I ended up with 2 subscriptions for Intego firewall/virus protection (an old one about to expire) and a new one that I purchased when I got the new MacBook. But now, I cannot renew the new one and can't get customer service (I had exchanged e-mails and followed their instructions about cancelling one and replacing with new serial number and thought I had done this properly back in September and October. But now I find myself unable to renew the subscription, with no protection, getting warnings about viruses!!!! When I click on the renew l...Show More

I used this product exclusively on my Mac’s thinking it was the best because of the marketing line “developed by a company that knows Macs”.
I had it for multiple years until this week when my Mac got infected. X9 happily reported nothing found during full scans, and when I contacted the company they stated their product did have the capability to detect my infection. Well, it did not, and now I’m left with having to rebuild my Mac from scratch and try to extract my photos, documents and video’s from my infected hard drives.
Their support is through email or chat only; established companies will call you as well as perform remote assistance with you through the internet.
There is a reason they say – you get what you pay for.

Since the update to Big Sur my Intego software slows my Mac extremely! I just not workable, I had bought a 2 year subscription (and one year left) but I did uninstall Intego completely from my Mac and now it's just working like before. But now I'm looking for software who does work on my Mac.

I clearly have an issue. So I got Intego which did nothing, unless you count making things worse? Now, clicking on comments, or to get to a different part of a website, all open new tabs for adds or surveys. Still slow as molasses and I seem to have more problems. Should have just gone with a name I can trust.
