It's the question, we've all been asking - whether Avast’s wide variety of free and paid antivirus tools actually give you the best protection when you browse the web. Well, you can rest assured that the company provides options to protect you from hacks, malware, and ransomware, and even defends your privacy online.
Plus, when you install Avast, you also get several other perks that include protection from phishing, a firewall that stops attacks from getting to your computer, and a scanner that makes sure your Wi-Fi connection is always secure. With their multiple options and flexible pricing, Avast lets you choose exactly what level of protection you want.
I had seen excellent reviews of Avast’s many products, so I was excited when I found that the company’s products are indeed that great. The company’s four plans give you a powerful antivirus that scans for several issues such as viruses, spyware, malware, and phishing attacks (when hackers attempt to steal your personal and sensitive information such as passwords and credit card details) on websites and emails. The antivirus is active about protecting you, scanning for any signs that you may be in danger. Avast is always updating their information on new attacks, so you’re always protected against the most recent hacks.
Avast Protects You on the Go
If you’re always on the go, you’re connecting your devices to public wireless networks that may be highly unsafe. Avast offers their Wi-Fi inspector, which checks out any network you’re joining and lets you know if it's secure and if there are any suspicious people connected. To protect your passwords, the company also offers a password vault that lets you keep all your credentials in one place. You can also use it to make logging into your favorite websites a 1-click experience. One of the cooler features I found was the company’s “sandbox,” which lets you install programs without worrying about infecting your computer with unknown malware.
Avast Offers a Rescue Disk for Emergencies
When you pay for an Avast subscription, you can protect your incoming and outgoing web traffic from hackers and stop attacks before they start. This helps you protect your privacy and keeps your computer’s data safe. I was also impressed with the company’s “Rescue Disk,” which helps you recover your operating system and files in case of an emergency.
Avast Defends you From Ransomware
Ransomware locks you out of your computer and threatens to delete or corrupt your files unless you pay a hefty sum. Unfortunately, it’s becoming a more popular attack and hackers can take more money from their victims. I was happy to see that Avast takes ransomware seriously and offers you a powerful tool to protect against it. When you install Avast, it constantly scans for any possible attacks, and it even goes a step farther. Avast’s Ransomware Shield lets you choose files you keep your files in a safe location that is protected from ransomware attacks. Ransomware Shield then encrypts the files and lets you choose more files to protect. You can even choose which programs can open the files.
Avast Received Excellent Grades from Testers
One of the most important things I look for in my antivirus tests is how they perform in the most extreme conditions. Avast receives high marks for its ability to detect attacks and even protect against new, unexpected hacks. More importantly, you can keep Avast running all the time, and your PC won’t feel any slower or stop working randomly. One other big plus for me is that the company doesn’t pick up too many incorrect readings, which is a good sign that Avast does its job well.
Keep your Privacy Secure Online
When you open Avast, you can click on the Privacy tab to set up your protection for browsing the web.
The first thing you can do is save your passwords into a single location, which makes it easy to access your favorite websites and keeps your login information safe. Another great tool you’ll find is the company’s Digital File Shredder. When you delete a file from your computer, some if it stays behind on your hard drive, even though you can’t see it. Avast’s digital shredder removes files and makes sure they’re completely gone from your computer. Another surprising but cool feature is the company’s Webcam shield, which helps protect you from peeping toms and hackers who could access your computer and spy on you. You can also choose which programs can actually use your webcam, and which can’t. Finally, the Company’s Data Shield scans all your files to find important and sensitive ones and adds more security to them to keep them safe from any attack.
Avast Keeps You A Step Ahead of Hackers
One of the best things I found when checking out Avast is that it works hard to stay one step ahead of any attack. Instead of simply scanning to see if there are any viruses on your computer, the antivirus also constantly checks your computer’s security settings to make sure it’s fully protected. If you accidentally open a suspicious file or program, Avast’s CyberCapture will stop it and keep it away from the rest of your files. More importantly, it will send the file to Avast’s security center to be scanned in-depth. You also receive the company’s Smart Scan, which checks your passwords, settings, and more to let you know how you can improve your online security. Finally, I was impressed with the Behavior Shield Tool, which keeps an eye on any fishy behaviors and locks your computer when it detects possible threats.
Flexible Modes Let You Run Your Computer How You Want
Another small perk that I found handy is that Avast can operate in at least three separate modes, changing how much it affects your computer’s performance. In addition to the default mode, which runs normally, you can choose the Passive mode, which gets rid of the antivirus but still lets you use the other security tools. This is great if you already have another antivirus but still want to use Avast’s other great perks. Finally, if you want to play games or watch movies on your computer, you can turn on Game Mode to turn off notifications and make sure your computer can run even the best-looking games normally.
Keep All Your Devices Secure
These days, you’re rarely handling all your web browsing exclusively on a PC. Avast products are compatible with both major operating systems—Windows and Mac OS—making it ideal if you have phones, computers, and tablets. Avast’s Mac security leaves some room for improvement, but you can still use it to protect against viruses and even take advantage of the company’s great PC optimization tools. Android users have a few more tools, which include several protection tools including password managers and a virus scanner and even a battery saver tool. Avast doesn’t offer an antivirus for iOS users, but it does give them great tools to protect their privacy. One of the more impressive things I noticed is that Avast protects your home devices such as Google Home or Amazon’s Alexa, which can be valuable targets for hackers.
Avast Enhances Your Device’s Performance
While not technically a part of protecting your computer, it was nice to see that Avast includes a Performance tab with several great tools that make your PC work better. These include a Cleanup utility, which scans through your computer to find temporary files and other things that can slow down your computer and eat up space.
When you run the Browser Cleanup, you can get rid of add-ons, toolbars, and other programs that you may have installed without noticing it. Most importantly, Avast gives you a great automatic software updater which makes sure all your programs are up to date and as secure as can be.
Ease of Use
I was very happy with how easy Avast is to use. The main window on your PC clearly separates each of the major features into three separate tabs that are easy to understand and navigate.
The main screen is focused on the important things, showing you whether you’re protected, and when each scan was run last. Even if you’re not a tech wizard, installing Avast is very easy. All you have to do is download the software from the company’s website, or your phone’s app store on mobile, and start the setup. Avast takes care of the rest, installing itself with the right settings from the get-go. You don’t even need to register or create an account!
If you ever have trouble with your antivirus, Avast’s support staff is more than ready to help. The company gives you a great source of information on their website, which includes guides on some important parts of the software, and articles on how to solve major problems. If you need serious help, the company’s call center is available around the clock. I found that the company’s support specialists were really great at answering all of my questions and even helped guide me through some problems I was having with customizing my scans.
I was really happy with the number of choices you have when choosing the right Avast product. The company has four plans which give you a variety of features and levels of protection. I personally preferred the Premier plan which gives you a great combination of security and privacy for a good value. If you choose the Internet Security option, you’ll be giving up a few privacy features like the Webcam Shield and the digital file shredder, but you’ll still have access to all the other great features.
If you need to turn your computer into Fort Knox, the Ultimate subscription is a great one-stop-shop solution. This includes all of Avast’s security, privacy, and even their PC cleanup tools. It also features Avast’s VPN, which is great for browsing the web while protecting your privacy from any attackers. The company’s plans are yearly subscriptions, and while they’re pricier than some of their competitors, they give you fantastic tools to protect your PC and yourself.
