Lookout Full Review — Good, but It Needs More Features

Lookout is a good tool for protecting mobile endpoints. It offers advanced threat detection and tools to protect users from phishing attacks, real-time protection against malicious apps, and easy-to-use administrative controls. Lookout is designed to be integrated with existing security environments, so compatibility shouldn’t be a problem.

The downside is that Lookout doesn’t have that many features. It lacks a VPN, spam filter, dark web monitoring, and a few other features that top mobile antiviruses like Norton and Bitdefender come with.

Lookout Security Features — Great Malware Detection, Few Extras

Lookout is great at blocking most threats that mobile devices face. It uses AI to hunt for changes in behavior or suspicious activity within your phone. Once it finds a threat, Lookout quarantines it and alerts you to the problem, giving you the final say over what is done.

The real-time protection is quite good. It blocks malicious files and apps before they can be downloaded onto protected phones. I tested it out against a wide range of malware samples, and Lookout caught roughly 99% of them, putting it roughly on par with the best antiviruses on the market (but it does fall shy of Norton’s 100% detection rating).

Lookout’s main anti-malware features are only available on Android, but that’s because of Apple’s strict app policies.

The web protection blocks malicious websites and phishing scams. It also flags suspicious emails and text messages (though it doesn’t actively block spam). I compared it to Google Chrome’s built-in web protection tools, and I’m happy to report that Lookout had a higher detection rating.

Lookout also regularly scans any Wi-Fi networks you connect to, making sure that they’re secure. If it detects anything suspicious about your network connection, you’ll get an alert. It provides defense against man-in-the-middle attacks, too.

Despite the lack of features and inability to block most non-app forms of malware, it’s pretty good. It detected most of the threats I threw at it, and it’s easy to integrate into your company’s existing security solutions to get feedback on your whole company.

Lookout Ease of Use & Setup — Easy to Use (Despite a Confusing Website)

Lookout is pretty easy to use. It has an intuitive enough layout, so it’s never hard to find specific features or options (not that there are many to be found). There’s a bit of a learning curve when it comes to navigating the admin console, but every good business-grade antivirus will have some complexities.

However, the website is frustrating to navigate. Between dead links and pages covering now-defunct plans, it was a headache. For example, clicking on the Endpoint Security tab at the bottom of the screen takes you to an error 404. I wish the website was more direct about what features Lookout actually offers. There’s too much fluff and not enough concrete detail.

Despite issues with the website, the Lookout app is pretty user-friendly. The central admin console is both accessible and fleshed out. It’s easy to look over reports, change or enforce policies, and alter permissions.

Overall, Lookout has a great UI with an easy-to-use admin console, but I have some complaints about the confusing website, abundance of fluff, lack of direct feature explanations, and useless/dead links.

Lookout Customer Support — Decent for Paying Customers, but Sluggish Response Times

Lookout’s customer support is a mixed bag. To start, it has several customer support options for subscribers, including:

• Live chat.
• Phone support.
• Email support.
• Community forums.
• Assigned representative.

It has a decent range of options, but none of them are particularly great compared to competitors. If you’re a subscriber, there are FAQs and user manuals to solve most simple problems. As a free customer, you’re limited to a collection of blog posts, podcasts, and barely-helpful videos.

The live chat is fine. But unless you’re a paying customer, you can only access a rather useless chatbot. All it did for me was point to a login page and another where I could talk to sales. Once you have a plan, you can speak to live representatives.

The phone support could be better. I called phone support and left a message saying I had questions about Lookout’s features. A few days later, I still hadn’t received an answer.

Email support is about the same. Once you pick up a plan, you can email representatives, but the response times can be pretty variable.

Overall, customer support isn’t great. You need to put money up front just to see the FAQs or email a representative about basic questions, response times can vary and err on the slow side, and the chatbot is painfully bad.

Is Lookout Good Enough to Buy?

Lookout is a decent option, but it has some notable issues. It has excellent malware detection ratings, but I hesitate to call it a fully-featured antivirus.

Lookout scans apps using heuristic analysis to check for dangerous behaviors. During my tests, it scored a 99% malware detection rating. On iOS, it doesn’t offer any form of malware scanning, but that’s normal for an iOS antivirus.

I’m a fan of the phishing protection. It alerts you whenever you’re about to access a malicious website, or if a text message in your inbox is suspicious. It’s pretty customizable and effective. I’d argue it’s Lookout’s best feature.

Aside from that, it’s easy to integrate with multiple security platforms/frameworks, detects jailbroken or rooted phones, and includes Wi-Fi protection, all of which can be managed and reviewed from the central admin console.

However, it’s not perfect. It lacks a few features that I’d expect to see from a top business antivirus. Most notably, there’s no VPN, dark web monitoring, or password manager.

It certainly doesn’t have as many features as top offerings like Norton and Bitdefender, but if you only need the basics like protection from phishing and dangerous apps, it’s not a bad option.
